The U.S. Embassy in Colombia has issued a security alert for the Cesar department due to the high risk of attacks from illegal armed groups, including the National Liberation Army (ELN). This warning was published on the official website of the diplomatic office.
According to information, multiple drone attacks loaded with explosives targeting police substations and government forces in Cesar have occurred in 2026. In light of this situation, U.S. authorities have urged heightened security measures and a preventive stance against potential dangers.
The statement mentions recent incidents, such as the attack in July against the police substation in El Burro, where five officers were injured. There is also a report of an attack in Curumaní/San Roque in August, which left one police officer dead, and new drone attacks at the end of the month, causing injuries among soldiers.
The alert advises American citizens to be aware of their surroundings, particularly in areas near police stations, government buildings, military facilities, and major roads, where security incidents may occur. It also emphasizes the importance of avoiding confrontations with armed individuals and maintaining a low profile.
Other recommendations include avoiding crowds, demonstrations, and places prone to disturbances. The Embassy suggests that citizens stay informed through local media and periodically check security updates.
As part of preventive measures, citizens are urged to review emergency plans and keep their phones charged to facilitate communication in case of any eventuality. These guidelines are part of the usual protocol when a regional alert is issued.
The warning for Cesar adds to the general travel recommendations from the U.S. State Department, which advises against traveling to Arauca, Cauca (except Popayán), Valle del Cauca (except Cali), and Norte de Santander due to risks associated with crime and terrorism. Travel to areas less than 10 kilometers from the border with Venezuela is also discouraged due to dangers of crime and armed confrontations.
This alert situation comes amid increasing concerns about attacks on government forces and the use of drones by illegal groups.
