The United States Embassy in Colombia has issued a security alert due to a “high risk” of attacks in the department of Cesar, where there is activity from illegal armed groups, including the National Liberation Army (ELN).
In a statement, the embassy warned that these groups may carry out attacks with little or no warning, targeting police stations, government buildings, military facilities, and related infrastructure. It also mentioned that US government personnel may face travel restrictions to certain areas of the department due to these risks.
Throughout this year, multiple attacks involving drones loaded with explosives have been reported against police substations and security force positions in Cesar. The embassy referred to an attack in July at the police substation in the town of El Burro, in Pailitas, where five officers were injured, and another attack in August in Curumaní that left a police officer dead. Additionally, drone attacks in the southern part of the department at the end of August also resulted in injuries to several soldiers.
The Cesar Governorship, along with the Colombian Army, has implemented drone-jamming technology systems at the Tenth Brigade, located in Valledupar. This initiative aims to “neutralize the aerial threats posed by organized armed groups” and strengthen the protection of the Public Force and the civilian population, according to a previous statement from the Army.
