Gaby Pérez del Solar, a key figure in Peruvian volleyball and an Olympic medalist, commented on the current situation of the Peruvian national team and the reasons why some players refuse to represent the country.

In a recent interview on the program Quinto Set, Pérez del Solar discussed the importance of wearing the national jersey. “When I said no to the national team, it was because I retired. That was the only time I didn’t hesitate, I was sure I was going to retire. Even though I retired young, I believe that putting on the jersey goes beyond everything; beyond what they might pay you, beyond a minor injury,” she explained. She also emphasized that the moment of singing the national anthem is a unique experience. “Having all of Peru see you sing the national anthem is the most amazing thing that can happen. Abroad, when your national anthem plays, that is putting on the jersey,” she added.

Pérez del Solar, referring to the reasons for some players’ refusal to join the national team, stated that “they must have their reasons” and suggested factors such as the physical demands in the Liga Peruana de Vóley. She mentioned that the league is “very long and very tough,” also recognizing that it is a business for the federation and the companies involved. This can lead to players’ physical wear and tear.

Furthermore, the former center hinted that some volleyball players might be prioritizing their professional careers abroad. “I think that, due to fear of wearing themselves out or getting injured — which, as I said before, no injury matters when it comes to putting on the jersey — surely for them it is already another priority,” she remarked. She added that pressure and emotional fatigue can also influence their decision not to participate in the national team. “Perhaps the psychological aspect also influences the decision. They end up so stressed that they say, ‘No, this time I don’t want to play,’” she concluded.
