On September 4, Alianza Lima announced Paolo Guerrero’s injury, which will make him unavailable for the clásico against Universitario de Deportes on September 12, corresponding to the ninth round of the Clausura Tournament of Liga 1 2026.

The club reported that during the match against Deportivo Garcilaso, where the seventh round of the tournament was being played, Guerrero suffered an injury that forced him to leave the game. “The forward suffered an injury that prevented him from continuing and he had to be substituted,” detailed the club’s medical report.

After undergoing the necessary examinations, it was confirmed that the player has a grade two strain in his left biceps femoris muscle. Alianza Lima also stated that Guerrero, 42, has already begun his recovery process and that physiotherapy sessions are being conducted under the supervision of the club’s medical staff.

Although the club has not specified the recovery time, it is estimated that a strain of this type can take between four to eight weeks to heal, which rules out his participation in the clásico scheduled for Saturday at 20:00 hours at the Alejandro Villanueva stadium, a match that could be the last of his career.

Guerrero’s injury comes at a controversial time, as a section of the fanbase has expressed criticism towards his performance and conduct. Some of this criticism intensified after he was substituted and did not return to the bench after halftime, which certain fans interpreted as a sign of discontent, especially following the defeat against Deportivo Garcilaso.

The situation is exacerbated by the dissemination of information regarding the club’s financial condition, which includes significant losses and unexpected payments, one of them to Gabriel Sapio, Guerrero’s representative. Although the initial figures were questioned by Sapio, the controversy has lessened following the statement from administrator Alfredo Arosemena, who confirmed that the relationship with Sapio has been dissolved.
