5 Strategies for Fair Task Division at Home

Distributing household responsibilities can be a challenge for many families, and it doesn’t always mean an equal split. The key lies in establishing agreements that each household considers fair and sustainable.

The first strategy is to understand that the division of tasks does not have to be strictly 50/50, but it must be perceived as fair by all members. Author and specialist Eve Rodsky points out that “fairness is not always equality, and equality is not always fair.” Recognizing that different tasks require different levels of time and energy is crucial for achieving real balance.

The second recommendation involves having brief meetings to review workloads and anticipate changes. Lindsay Daudistel, mother of 8 children, shares that she has a daily meeting with her partner before the kids wake up, during which they discuss the day’s needs. Pediatric occupational therapist Sydney Bennett suggests that even a weekly 10-minute meeting can be beneficial to assess task distribution.

Alternating tasks throughout the day is the third strategy. This approach allows each family member to take on different responsibilities throughout the day, thus preventing one person from accumulating all the work. Professional organizer Liora Seltzer describes how her family alternates tasks like walking the dog and preparing breakfast to ensure everyone participates in daily routines.

The fourth strategy focuses on assigning tasks based on skills, although it’s important to conduct periodic checks to avoid the consolidation of fixed burdens. Rodsky emphasizes that just because one person is better at a task does not justify them taking on all the responsibilities related to that function.

Lastly, family therapist Angela Caiazza proposes the practice of “skill swapping,” where family members exchange skills to learn the functions others perform. This strategy can be particularly helpful in emergency situations or unexpected changes in family routines.

As family dynamics evolve, it is essential to review and adjust these agreements to ensure a fair distribution of tasks at home.
