The National Court (AN) has expressed its support for Judge María Tardón in the face of criticism from Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska regarding her handling of the migration crisis in Ceuta.

This Friday, through a document disseminated by Europa Press, the Governing Chamber of the AN defended Tardón’s work, stating that “she has not interfered with national security.” This statement comes in response to the minister’s accusations, who expressed concern about the judge’s decision to limit the National Police’s access to certain reports on the situation in Ceuta.

The Governing Chamber pointed out that the magistrate’s actions not only respect her judicial functions but are also an effort to protect and defend the general interest of Spain. “Not only has she not interfered with national security in her judicial actions, but on the contrary, she is acting for the preservation and defense of the general interest of Spain,” the document emphasizes.

Furthermore, the AN acknowledged the support of Isabel Perelló, President of the Supreme Court and the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), who responded to Marlaska by defending judicial independence and calling for respect towards Tardón. This intervention has been praised by the Governing Chamber of the AN, which emphasizes the importance of respect for judicial decisions by political authorities.

The migration crisis in Ceuta, which occurred in May 2021, led to a significant increase in the arrival of immigrants to the autonomous city, generating both a political debate and judicial analysis regarding the response of the authorities. The defense of judicial independence remains a relevant issue in the current context.
