The President of the European Council, António Costa, will meet on September 10 in Madrid with the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, during his capital tour to discuss the European Union budget.
This meeting is part of a series of gatherings that Costa has conducted, having visited 13 member states so far, including Hungary, Greece, and Cyprus. In the coming week, he will meet with six other European leaders, starting Wednesday with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
On Thursday, Costa will hold meetings with Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela, Spanish President Pedro Sánchez, and Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro. His week of meetings concludes on Sunday with an appointment with Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo.
At the end of August, Costa expressed that this autumn would be a “decisive” period to finalize an agreement on the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), which will address key issues such as competitiveness, industrial transformation, defense, security, and strategic resilience. In his view, the European budget in the coming years must adapt to the current ‘difficult times,’ ensuring the continuity of funding for Cohesion Policy and the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
