In a recent statement, Alejandro “Alito” Moreno Cárdenas, leader of the PRI, has reiterated his offer of an alliance ahead of the upcoming elections in 2027, highlighting Grecia Quiroz, the mayor of Uruapan, as a potential candidate for the governorship of Michoacán.
This proposal comes as Moreno Cárdenas seeks to forge an opposition bloc to challenge Morena, though no formal agreement has yet been reached among the parties he aims to unite. This reflects the growing significance of Quiroz within Michoacán’s political landscape, as perceived by the PRI leader, who believes candidates like her have a chance to compete effectively.
Additionally, Moreno has left the door open for Alfonso Martínez, the mayor of Morelia, whose involvement would depend on ongoing political negotiations concerning viable candidacies. In comments made during a Senate session, he directly mentioned Quiroz and Martínez as potential candidates, emphasizing that the PRI possesses capable figures ready to participate.
“I believe we need to listen. In the PRI, we have qualified individuals, both women and men. Any candidate who is committed to serving Michoacán, such as Grecia and Poncho Martínez, can win the election,” stated Moreno.
Once again, the senator has expressed his ambitions for a coalition or inclusion of independent figures for the 2027 elections. However, proposals from the PRI faced resistance from opposition parties, prompting criticism from Moreno. He maintains that former opposition parties need to unite, setting aside their differences to field the best candidates based on regional conditions.
Moreno’s strategy includes a nationwide alliance aimed at competing effectively against Morena to reclaim a legislative majority in the Chamber of Deputies and to dispute the 17 governorships at stake next year. He argues that the election should be viewed not just through local candidacies but as an opportunity to influence legislative decisions significantly.
Opposition parties, notably Movimiento Ciudadano and Acción Nacional, have hesitated to join forces with the PRI under Moreno’s proposed conditions. Movimiento Ciudadano has outright rejected partnering with the PRI for the 2027 elections, and Moreno has publicly criticized the party for exacerbating voter fragmentation, citing its leadership’s proximity to former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Despite the denials from Movimiento Ciudadano and the reluctance from PAN, Moreno persists in his call for collective agreements, stressing the need to focus on realistic winning strategies for each state. Notably, Jorge Romero Herrera from PAN clarified in 2025 that the party would not pursue coalitions for the upcoming elections.
